Portuguese cyclist João Almeida abandoned the Tour of Poland, which he won in 2021, after the fall he suffered in Thursday's stage, the UAE Team Emirates team confirmed this Friday. "Unfortunately, Benoit Cosnefroy and Sebastian Molano were forced to abandon after yesterday's (Thursday) crash. This morning, João Almeida will not be leaving, after crashing in the same incident", explained the team, in a statement published on the social network X. The UAE formation further added that “There are no fractures, and the three boys will now head home to rest before their next races”, wishing the runners a quick recovery. On Thursday, João Almeida fell and seriously injured himself, in the fourth stage won by the Dutchman Bart Lemmen (Visma-Lease a Bike). In a race marked by rain, which left the ground slippery, a fall involving around three dozen cyclists 40 kilometers from the finish line – some abandoned them – harmed a group of competitors, including the Portuguese rider, badly treated, with an injured left leg and torn shorts, who ended up finishing and coming in 137th, exactly 16 minutes behind the new yellow jersey. The Tour of Poland marked João Almeida's return to competition, after withdrawing from the Tour Auvergne – Rhône-Alpes, the former Dauphiné Criteria, in mid-June, and was the Portuguese's last preparation race for the Tour of Spain, which will be held from August 22nd to September 13th.
