Portuguese center Neemias Queta, from the Boston Celtics, will be present at the inauguration of a basketball court at a school in Massachusetts, in the United States, which will feature a work of art inspired by Portuguese-American cultural heritage. At stake is the renovation of the basketball court at King Open School, in Cambridge, in the heart of the historic Portuguese-American community of Greater Boston, home to generations of families from the Azores, Madeira and mainland Portugal. "Created by a team of Portuguese artists who traveled to Massachusetts specifically for the project, the work of art intertwines the school's fundamental values of diversity and inclusion with the cultural heritage of the local Portuguese-American community", says a statement sent to Lusa by the consul general of Portugal in Boston. The inauguration is scheduled for September 12th and will be attended by Neemias Queta, center for the Boston Celtics and first Portuguese player in the history of the North American Basketball League (NBA), in an event that will be open to the community. The celebration will feature basketball activities for young people, tasting of Portuguese products and community meetings in honor of diversity, inclusion and culture. The project was created by Hoopers – a global basketball community that transforms public courts into spaces for culture, sport and community -, in partnership with Delta Cafés and Sumol Compal. It also had the collaboration of the Consulate General of Portugal in Boston and Cambridge Public Schools. "Paying homage to Portuguese heritage and, at the same time, contributing to local youth makes this a very special moment for us", stated Bruno Alves, manager of Delta Cafés in the USA, mentioned in a statement. "We are celebrating Portugal and thanking this community for welcoming our people. From those who arrived here decades ago to athletes like Neemias, who inspire us with their hard work and perseverance", added Beatriz Lopes, manager Sumol Compal International.
