Argentine President Javier Milei asked the International Automobile Federation (FIA) this Monday for the return, after almost 30 years, of Formula 1 to Argentina, the country of the legend Fangio. "We are a country passionate about motorsport (…), we have the tradition, we have the drivers and now we are back to institutional seriousness" necessary to organize Formula 1 races, he stated during the American FIA congress, taking place in Buenos Aires. The last Argentine Grand Prix was held in 1998 (with Michael Schumacher winning) in Buenos Aires, where around twenty F1 Grands Prix have been held since the 1950s. Argentina's passion for F1 was evident last April, when young Argentine Alpine driver Franco Colapinto, who has had a seat since 2024, gathered a huge crowd – around half a million people, according to organizers – during an exhibition on a 4km circuit laid out in the capital. "We want to see Colapinto race in the country", insisted Javier Milei this Monday. However, memories of Argentine glory go back to distant times, with Carlos Reutemann, winner of 12 Grands Prix in the 70s and 80s, and runner-up world champion in 1981. And, of course, Juan Manuel Fangio, icon of Argentine sports with five world champion titles between 1951 and 1957. The Oscar and Juan Galvez circuit in Buenos Aires, named after two drivers from the 40s and 50s, is currently under construction. This is an ambitious 100 million dollar project that provides for a new track and new stands to be able to host motorcycle Grand Prix and, in the long term, Formula 1, according to the municipality.
