Atlético Madrid completes the signing of Cuti Romero

Preliminary agreement between Atlético de Madrid and Tottenham for the transfer of the Argentine defender to Atlético de Madrid.

Athletic from Madrid e Tottenham reached an agreement in principle on Wednesday night for the transfer of 
Cuti Romero for the Rojiblancos. Although both clubs are still working to finalize the deal, only minor details, such as the exchange of documents, remain for one of the biggest signings of the summer to be made official.

The 28-year-old Argentine defender is expected to travel to Madrid in the next few hours to undergo medical examinations and sign a contract with Atlético de Madrid until 2031. Atlético will pay around €40 million for the former Tottenham captain, who was also targeted by the club last summer.

So, from London, they stood firm, demanding 70 million for the Argentine player, a figure that would never be achieved at the Metropolitano, despite the insistent desire to Diego Simeone of having at his disposal an experienced player who could help improve the defense, one of Atlético de Madrid's weaknesses last season.

The willingness of Cuti, who had already expressed interest in joining Atlético the previous year, was crucial in completing the deal, and was even willing to accept a salary reduction to play for the Madrid club. Now, Tottenham's demands have been reduced (an agreement was reached 12 months ago) and Atletico have finally secured the signature of the Argentine defender.

Just over a week ago, Inter Milan was the favorite to sign Romero. The Italian club was very close to meeting the value requested by Tottenham, but the player preferred to wait for the proposal from Atlético de Madrid, which needed to get rid of players like Almada , Molina e Ruggeri before trying to hire Cuti.

The Argentines have already left, joining River Plate and Roma respectively, and Aston Villa is close to finalizing the signing of the Italian. This allowed the Madrid club to invest heavily in Cuti Romero, whose transfer to Atlético will be made official soon.
