O Barcelona officially announced the hiring of Karim Adeyemi, 24-year-old international striker from Borussia Dortmund, on Thursday, July 23, 2026. The Catalan club agreed to pay a fixed amount of €22 million, plus €7 million in bonuses. While selling Adeyemi is beneficial for Dortmund given that he only had one year left on his contract, it breaks with the extraordinary profits that Borussia historically makes from selling its talented players. Thus, the Bundesliga's big underdog, Bayern Munich's rival, has gained a reputation as one of the clubs that sells its players best in Europe, if not the best. With Adeyemi, however, they were unable to achieve their traditional strategy of selling the player for significantly more than the original transfer cost. In 2022, Borussia paid €30 million to acquire Karim from RB Salzburg. Among the most lucrative transfers, one in which Barcelona was the main buyer stands out. In 2017, Borussia Dortmund sold the French winger Ousmane Dembélé for €135 million, including bonuses. The German club had paid €15 million to Rennes for the young French talent a year earlier, which resulted in a profit of €120 million between the two transactions.
